Summary (from the back of the book): In Diary of a Beverly Hills Matchmaker, Marla takes her readers for a hilarious romp through her days as an LA matchmaker and her daily struggles to keep her self-esteem from imploding in a town where looks are everything and money talks. From juggling the demands of her out-of-touch clients... to trying her best to meet the capricious demands of an insensitive boss... to the ups and downs of her own marriage to a Latin husband who doesn't think that she is "domestic" enough, Marla writes with charm and self-effacement about the universal struggles that all women face in their lives.
Review: This book had me smiling from the first page. Marla Martenson's approach is one where sarcasm, humor, and a great outlook on life get her through her harried days and multi-faceted life. I liked the combination of her daily life: husband, writing, friends, and stuff mixed in with the very crazy and funny emails from her clients.
Marla includes dating and breaking up stories from both the women (all 10s, of course) and the men (all rich, of course) whom she brings together. There are success stories of marriage and exclusive dating and there are stories of disaster. The life these filthy rich people live is so different from my own even though I am just a couple hours north of them. I cannot even fathom dating someone because they have money, nor can I imagine dating someone based solely on looks so the content is fun, shocking, and amazing, like watching a TV show about a society of which I am not a part.
To give you a sense of the book, here's one of my favorite parts (warning: female body parts coming up):
"I'm also remembering a recent client who broke up with a thirty-two-year-old woman he really liked because he said that she had big areolas [that's the part around your nipple!]. Yes, big areolas! She was perfect in every way: sweet, charming, financially secure, intelligent, cute as a posy with a rockin' body, but he said he dreaded when she took off her blouse."
Ok. Really? This is so beyond my world that I loved reading about it and marveling at the craziness that is out there! If you'd like a chance to read this book, fill in the entry form below.
I grew up in southern California and still live here. This book struck a chord with me given that I am surrounded by "beautiful people" all day long. Trust me, you get quite the complex growing up here. Click to see my updated Google Map.
