Book Beginnings: May 13, 2011

This meme is hosted by Katy at A Few More Pages
How to participate: Share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading. Include the title and the author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you feel so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line, and let us know if you liked or did not like the sentence. The link-up will be here at A Few More Pages every Friday.

I have heard a lot about The Dressmaker of Khair Khana by Gayle Tzenach Lemmon and am really looking forward to reading it.

"Kamila Jan, I'm honored to present you with your certificate."

I like this opening line because I immediately know she is educated at some level. For a woman in Afghanistan, that's a great thing. I am almost half way into the book and feel like it needs to get to the meat of the matter  (i.e., being dressmakers)

Hi Helen. I have seen The Dressmaker of Khair Khana around the blogs. This looks really interesting and am planning on putting this at the top of my TBR pile. Looking forward to your review.

Have a great weekend. This might be a great weekend for reading...rain, rain, rain

That book looks - and sounds - great! I'm always interested to read about women in other cultures, particularly Afghanistan, so I'll have to look out for this one now.
Here's my beginning:

I've seen this one around...and that is a simple and yet revealing opener. We do learn something about the character.

Here's MY FRIDAY MEMES POST

Hmm...not sure this opening line does much for me. Though I guess I am a little curious about the certificate. What it is for?

Cathy--I am mentally preparing for rain. :-( I knew I was going to read this book so only skimmed people's reviews so that the book wasn't spoiled for me

Book Gatherer--I feel like I am on a bit of an Afghanistan kick. Last year it was India. I'm off to read your Book Beginning

BrownGirl--While the opening line left a bit to be desired, the next paragraph really starts to fill in the details

Laurel-Rain--Yes, I think we do have some sense of her from just this one line

Anne--The certificate is a teaching certificate!

Katy--The book turns out to be good, but not great. However, I do think it's interesting and worth reading
