This Monday, April 23 is World Book Night where people all over the UK and the US will each give out 20 free books to reluctant readers. The idea is to have 50,000 people give out 1 million free books. I picked up my books last night at my local indie bookstore, Chaucer's.
Originally I was to give out Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls, but the store had extra boxes so now I have 60 books to give out! I am also giving out The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.
The books are special editions printed just for World Book Night, the authors have waived the royalties, and a few companies have underwritten the publishing.
I've put up a display in my library to lure students to get a free book on Monday. Whatever I don't give out at school I will distribute at my daughter's dance studio and on the streets. The group photo is 6 of the Santa Barbara people who are giving out books.
