Non-fiction November: week 2

It's week 2 of Non-fiction November and the topic is Fiction / Nonfiction Book Pairing hosted by Sarah’s Book Shelves. Here's the instructions: this week, pair up a nonfiction book with a fiction title. It can be a “If you loved this book, read this!” or just two titles that you think would go well together. Maybe it’s a historical novel and you’d like to get the real history by reading a nonfiction version of the story.

I am so not good at this sort of thing. Let's see. I'm going to go with Picking Cotton by Jennifer Thompson-Cannino and Ronald Cotton and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Stick with me here.

Picking Cotton is a non-fiction book about an African-American man who is falsely accused of a crime and sent to prison for 11 years and the aftermath when his accuser finds she's made a mistake. The Hate U Give is a fiction book about an African-American young man who is shot by the police while innocent and the aftermath.

Both books are timely, about crimes against African-American men who are innocent, and the events that roll out from the initial event. And both are fabulous books.
