3 Reviews: Floyd Norman, trailblazing animator

Floyd E. Norman is an American animator, writer, and comic book artist. Norman is now 86, but worked for a number of animation companies including Walt Disney Animation Studios, Hanna-Barbera Productions, Ruby-Spears, Film Roman, and Pixar. He was also employed at Disney Publishing.
Norman grew up in Santa Barbara (where I live) and went to my high school (he was Santa Barbara High School, Class of 1953). This past weekend, Santa Barbara Black Culture House, a group run by a friend and her husband, hosted a screening of Floyd Norman: An Animated Life, and I had the opportunity to see some of his books as well.

Norman was the first Black animator hired at Disney and he worked on most of the animated movies and Saturday morning cartoons that we all grown up with (if you grew up in the US). I was amazed to learn that he is responsible for drawing Mowgli (Jungle Book), the fairies in Sleeping Beauty, and so much more. Floyd Norman is such an interesting man and his career is amazing!
