I know we do not all agree on the issue of abortion, but this is bigger than that. This isn't really about abortion or the love of children, it's about controlling women and particularly poor women and women of color. It has been a difficult week in the US with our recent Supreme Court decision to reverse the constitutional right for access to abortion. We all know this is just the beginning of the conservative right taking away civil rights that so many have fought for over the past decades. It is great that some major companies are offering to help pay for travel expenses for their employees to access health care, but a woman shouldn't have to tell her employer about her medical conditions or needs. I am lucky to live in California but cannot forget about the women in so many other states who have just loss access to clinics who provide fertility treatment and other OB/GYN services. I worked at Planned Parenthood and know that I counseled women who were desperate to get pregnant, those who chose to carry see their pregnancies through to full term and give the baby up for adoption or keep it, as well as some who chose abortion. It is not my place to choose for them.

I fear for my friends in same-sex marriages who are surely the next to have their right to a legal marriage taken away. I fear for my nonbinary and trans friends and colleagues. I fear for the victims of US gun violence. I fear living in a theocracy.

It feels petty to talk about the good stuff today, but I also cannot survive on the negative. I attended another two retirement parties for former colleagues and it was super fun to see former colleagues again, to catch up, to share stories, and to laugh!

Today my daughter and I are headed to Los Angeles as we both feel the need for a change of scenery. We're going to try a new bakery (Paris Baguette) for lunch and go shopping at Daiso (a Japanese department store) to see if we can find things for her new apartment.

I can't believe it's almost the end of the month! I keep staring at the stack of books I have chosen for July and I am just not convinced yet that I have chosen a combination of books that will make me happy in the upcoming month. I have a few more days to decide....
