Sunday Salon: November 26, 2023

Deb Nance at Readerbuzz hosts The Sunday Salon.

Last Sunday was a busy one. In the morning I got together with my best friends from high school as one of us has recently had a horrible diagnosis. It's such a great group to all come into town and support her. We had breakfast then went for a walk and it was a beautiful day.

Sunday afternoon we had our first speaker for the UC Santa Barbara History Associates and it was really interesting; the professor is writing the biography of Robert Glenn, an enslaved person, and he is telling the man's story really well (it helps that the man himself was a gifted story teller with his recordings on file at the Library of Congress).

I worked Monday through Wednesday, but had Thursday through Sunday off, which felt really good and relaxing. A long-time dear friend suggested I watch seasons 1 and 2 of Bridgerton so that we might watch season 3 together when it finally comes out and I got totally hooked! I've now finished both seasons and eagerly await season 3. The dresses, the settings, the gossip... it's all delicious. I also started watching Lessons in Chemistry, which I am enjoying.

Thanksgiving day was stunning, quiet, and nice. I went for a beach walk with a friend in the morning, read, had dinner at my parents, then on to pie with my best friend and her husband at her dad's house. I hadn't seen her dad for quite a few years so it was lovely to spend time with him again.

There are books that we feel we should read; they are often books everyone seems to like. I am haunted by some of these books and All the Light We Cannot See is one of them. It won a Pultizer for goodness sake and has sat on my TBR shelf for (5? 6?) years. I have tried to read it 3 times, never getting past about page 20. I told myself it must not be the right time, I'll get to it some day. And now it is a Netflix mini series. I figured this was my chance! I'd watch it and feel my duty was done. So this past week I watched and I skipped all of episode 2 and most of episode 3. But I watched episodes 1 and 4. I am done. I have removed the book from my TBR shelf, put it in the local Free Little Library, and I feel unburdened. I realize it wasn't bad timing, this book/mini series just wasn't for me.

Here is is the current state of my 2023 challenges. At this point, I am counting individual books for multiple categories in each challenge, but I'll replace them with other books throughout the year.
