This week I was back at home in a rainy southern California. Actually, I like the rain. I like the idea of it being wet and cold outside while I am warm and cozy inside. Great motivation for reading. Too bad I had such a busy week and couldn't get much reading done.
I flew home Monday (what a wonderful two weeks away) and Tuesday went out to dinner with friends, Wednesday hosted a talk for the UCSB History Associates (Smuggling in the Caribbean during the Haitian Revolution), Thursday I ran an alumni board meeting, and Friday I met up with a former colleague to help her figure out some work stuff (I'll admit it was nice to be needed in that capacity). Yesterday I went to the Farmer's market (I will say being on the east coast made me miss my local produce!) and worked on my taxes.
I am also coordinating all the incoming scholarship applications for our alumni board. Boy, whoever is in charge of the FAFSA (financial aid) forms this year royally screwed up; what a mess. Poor students and their families: delays in the information being released; a website that doesn't work; delayed notifications; and more. Most colleges are having to delay when students commit by a month!
I bought a book that a friend and I are reading aloud to one another. We live far away from each other so it's difficult to find the time, but we'll get through it eventually.
Here is is the current state of my 2024 challenges.
