Summary: Meet Misty Divine - your favourite new amateur sleuth!
Drag isn't just dramatic. It's deadly...
By day, shy hotel accountant Joe hides behind their desk and plays by the rules.
By night, Joe takes to the stage as Misty Divine, an upcoming star of the London drag scene.
But when Misty’s mentor, Lady Lady, is found dead in her dressing room, Misty finds herself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
Because Lady Lady was murdered – and as the only ones with access to her room, Misty and her fellow performers quickly become prime suspects.
Heartbroken by the loss, and frustrated by the inaction of the police, Joe is determined to uncover the killer in their midst.
But what can they, a mere hotel accountant, possibly do?
This is a case for Misty Divine…
Review: A mystery that's described as Agatha Christie meets Ru Paul? Sounds like fun to me! And I love that the author knows what she's talking about; Hollly Stars is one of the UK's most famous drag queens so I figured the story would have authenticity in that respect.
This book is fun but also deals with some serious issues beyond the mystery itself. In particular issues such as gender, identity, how we address people (think using dead names, the wrong pronouns, etc), and how different people respond to others whom they don't understand.
The killer ended up being someone I didn't suspect so that part was well done. I liked that Misty and her partner Miles (I so hope they stay together through the series!) were amateur sleuths who got into trouble since they don't know what they are doing, but also helped figure it out in the end. This was a fun mystery taking place in a world I don't normally inhabit so that's a good thing.
