My best friend and I spent Wednesday and Thursday in Vegas. She had never been so it was fun to be with her for her first visit. We started the visit at lunch with two women that we went to high school with, which was super fun. We spent the afternoon wandering around the more famous casinos, rode the monorail and went to the Janet Jackson concert! I will say that the concert was good and fun, but not excellent.
Day two we rode the ferris wheel and wandered the southern part of the strip before heading to the airport and home. We became a little obsessed with the Sphere and its ever-changing images.
Friday night, I attended an author event with Lisa See! She is one of my favorite authors, and the event was in an intimate setting, so it was super fun. She is a wonderful storyteller, both on the page and in person. I loved hearing how she gets the ideas for her novels, her writing and research process, and her fun family stories of growing up in Chinatown. Too bad the interviewer wasn't great.
While I was in Vegas, there was a round of layoffs at work and 15 were let go. I am glad I survived, but feel so bad for all the friends and colleagues that are instantly gone! The next day, there was an all-employee meeting where they tried to make us feel okay about it all, but that always feels hollow.
